Weekend plans

Everyone knows I love a good resale...sale, and there are several good ones coming up in the Fox Valley. Woohoo!

This weekend, I'll be at the John Shields and McDole Elementary PTO Sale in Sugar Grove. I stumbled upon this sale by accident in the spring, and I was really impressed! Lots of kids clothes, equipment and toys, and everything was nicely organized.  The sale is Friday, September 9 from 6-9pm and Saturday, September 10 from 8am to 1pm at the Sugar Grove Community House.

Next weekend, I'm giving the St. Peter Barn Sale a try. I first learned about this sale from a participant in my most recent Live Well, Spend Less! class at Waubonsee.  The St. Peter Barn Sale is held Saturday, September 17 from 8am to 3pm and Sunday, September 18 from 9am to 2pm at the Kane County Fairgrounds.  Based on the pictures at their facebook page, this sale looks huge!

Finally, in October I'll stop at the resale event hosted by the Tri-Cities Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club.  Held at the Mooseheart Field House, this sale is on Saturday, October 1 from 8am to 1pm. It costs $1.00 per person to enter, and you'll need to bring a stroller, wagon or large tote bag to haul around your purchases.

At each sale, I'll be on the lookout for winter clothes for the Little Guy and Little Miss as well as Halloween costumes and dress-up outfits.  If you see a crazy woman frantically digging through the 5T and 2T sizes looking for footed pajamas, it's just me. Come on over and say Hello!

Flea market find

Not too long ago friend Yogi and I hit the Kendall County Flea Market

We got there early, so not many vendors had set up other than the ones in the barn. But the barn displays were fantastic!  Every vendor took such pride in their wares and things were beautifully displayed.

The good thing about hitting the flea market early is that it's still cool outside (well, maybe not this week) and it's not crowded.

Here's my find from the flea market:

It's a square cake stand! Isn't it awesome?  Cake stands are quickly becoming my thing, and I was happy to snatch this up for only $10.00.  Yogi's theory on the hole in the middle is that it's meant to allow for stacking another smaller stand on top.  Do you have any ideas as to what the hole is for?

Yogi and I are heading to the Kane County Flea Market in August...maybe I'll add another piece to my growing cake stand collection!

Yard Sale Prep

Next Friday and Saturday, the TMI household will participate in the annual Lindens Subdivision Sale.  Remember this gigantic pile of stuff in my basement?

It will be there. All of it. For sale.  Cheap.  Please come get this stuff out of my house.  Thank you!

The sale will be Friday/Saturday/Sunday, June 17-19, though we'll only participate on Friday and Saturday. Each day the sale is from 9am to 3pm, and we usually have 20-30 houses participating.  The Lindens Subdivision is located immediately west of Orchard Road (Aurora IL) south of Prairie Street and north of Jericho Street.  Enter the subdivision on Suncrest Drive if you are going southbound on Orchard Road. Otherwise, enter the subdivision from either direction on Jericho Road by turning north on Summerhill Drive.

To spice things up, I'll be live-tweeting about the garage sale as it progresses:  follow me at www.twitter.com/miniMartha.

I suppose you can see how my weekend is going to go: bring boxes up from the basement, price stuff, loud shouting about how I've accumulated so much stuff in the first place, wash/rinse/repeat.

Oh yeah, I also need to get the rest this pile of topsoil off my driveway:

The pile is nowhere near that big now, but it has to go.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

What to do with castoffs

Once you've gone through your closet (or any room in your house, really) and made your big pile of stuff of you no longer want/need, you'll have to make a decision as to what to do with that pile.  As I see it, there are only five things you can do with clothing or household item castoffs:

1. Trash the junk.  Seriously, if no one else would be happy to see this stuff on their doorstep, then pitch it.  If your items are in good condition and could easily be reused, then read on!

2. Give it to friends/family.  Got a bunch of kids clothes your cherubs have outgrown?  Give the items that are clean and in wearable condition to someone else who can use them.  I have this arrangement with my friend Mary Anne.  When the Little Guy outgrows his clothes, we put them aside for Mary Anne's son, who is 2.5 years in age behind him.  Mary Anne saves the clothes her daughter has outgrown for Baby Girl, who is 2.5 years behind her.  It helps that our firstborn children were born within days of each other, and the second children were born within three months of each other.  This is a wonderful arrangement; we both save a ton of money on kids' clothes, and clothes that have only seen a few wearings (because kids grow so fast!) get a second life.  Also, we save a ton of money on kids' clothes.  Did I mention that one?

3.  Sell it through a resale or consignment shop.  In the Chicago area, we have a few chains of resale shops:  Once Upon a Child, Clothes Mentor and Plato's Closet.  These stores will purchase clothing items from you, depending on the brand, condition, style and their current stock, and you get the money immediately.  Consignment shops work a bit differently:  they will sell your items for you, but they take a portion of the purchase price that you set.  You get paid after the item sells, and sometimes according to the store's pre-arranged schedule (IE. monthly or quarterly).  Either option is great: you are recouping some of the cost on your clothing investment, and someone else is doing the work to sell the items.

4.  Donate the clothes to a charitable organization.  Goodwill, the Salvation Army, Purple Heart and more...there are countless charities who are willing to take your usable clothing and household items and resell them.  The money they make goes to fund their programs; read about Goodwill's Success Stories here.  By donating your items, you not only help out a worthwhile organization, but you also get a tax deduction.

While donating items is an easy process, please carefully consider which organization will get your items.  Make sure the organization is a legitimate charity by checking with your Secretary of State or State Attorney General.  Some solicitors say they are collecting items for a charity, but in reality they are taking your old stuff for themselves and giving only a small fraction of the profit to the charity they mentioned.  You can also contact your local Better Business Bureau to see if the organization is in good standing.  Finally, there are several online sites that provide information about charities:  Charity Navigator, Philanthropedia, and GuideStar  are reputable places for researching nonprofit organizations.

Once you've found a worthy charity in your area, check with them BEFORE you take in your donation.  You don't want to take your old electronic equipment to a place that only resells furniture.  And you don't want to haul 12 boxes of old clothes to a storefront to find out that their donation point is across town.

Also, think outside of the box when it comes to donating items to a charity.  For example, a local animal shelter would probably like to have your old towels and bedding items for the animals.  A neighbor's Girl Scout troop would love to have your old crafting items for their own projects.  Opportunities to get your good, clean and usable castoffs into the hands of people who truly need them abound. You just have to look.

My good friend Ashley adds:  "If you live in the city limits of Chicago, another great charity to donate gently used clothes to (child, teen, and adult) is Misericordia Home. They are a non-profit Catholic Charities organization that is home to 600 disabled children and adults. I have a ton of experience with this organization and they are legitimate."

5.  Have a yard/garage/rummage sale.  For this closet purge, and for the purging I have been and will continue to do over the next few weeks, this is the option for me.  I'll be having a yard sale or two this summer in an attempt to clear out my clutter and make a few bucks.  For anything that doesn't sell, I'm going with option #4: all yard sale leftovers will go to charity.

Have you started cleaning out your closet yet?  Do you know what you'll do with the stuff you no longer want?  I suspect that for many people, the agony and confusion about the decision (What do I do with all this stuff that I know I don't want?) keeps them from purging the unwanted items in the first place.  Don't let this happen to you!  As long as you are getting rid of the clutter, any option you choose from the above list will be a good one.  Now get busy cleaning out that closet!

The subdivision sale is here again!

Last year at this time, I blogged about our subdivision-wide yard sale where I found some great things at great prices, including a copy of Martha Stewart's Handmade Christmas. Score!

Now, it's that time of year again...when all my neighbors open up their garages, set up some tables and set out their old clothes, yard equipment, household items and the ever-popular "miscellaneous" for your perusing and purchasing pleasure.  It's the Lindens Spring Fling!

DATES: Friday, June 18; Saturday, June 19; and Sunday, June 20

TIME: 8am to 3pm (I think it only goes to noon on June 20, though)

LOCATION: The Lindens (Aurora, IL) subdivision is just west of Orchard Road, between Prairie Avenue and Jericho Road. You can access the subdivision from Orchard Road (southbound lanes only) and Jericho Road (both directions).

View the area map.

NOTE:  Maps of the houses participating will be available at both entrances to the subdivision.  Please drive slowly and watch for kids, as there is a large park in the middle of the subdivision and a TON of kids.

So come on out and enjoy the sale!  And if you see a sleep-deprived woman pushing a stroller around the sale early Saturday morning snatching up anything related to Martha Stewart, that's me.  Feel free to stop by and say hello. :)

Subdivision-wide yard sale

For those of you in Aurora and the western suburbs, the Lindens is having a subdivision-wide yard sale this coming weekend. Woohoo!

DATES: Friday, June 19; Saturday, June 20; and Sunday, June 21
TIME: 8am to 3pm
LOCATION: The Lindens subdivision is just west of Orchard Road, between Prairie Avenue and Jericho Road. You can access the subdivision from Orchard Road (southbound lanes only) and Jericho Road (both directions).
View the area map.

I'll be shopping with My Big Martha all day Saturday, so look for the two crazy ladies snapping up kids' clothes and bickering over who gets the antique chair with the toile print. Which would look fabulous in my guest room, by the way.
No matter where you are, I urge you to strike out on your own this weekend and find some rummage sales. You never know what treasures you might find. Like an antique chair covered in toile print, for example.
