Barley Barley Barley

Seven years ago, I brought home an adorable dog from Chicago Animal Control.  He ate my Tuna Helper right off my plate the second I turned my back and then peed in the house.  Good times!

In all seriousness, and as long as my Tuna Helper is out of reach, Barley is a wonderful dog.  If you are considering a pet, I urge you to adopt a dog or cat or other fun friend from an animal shelter.  There are so many good furballs out there that need good homes.  We found an amazing addition to our family through a shelter, and I know you can too!

Barley in the sun

Sometimes, Barley is a little cat-like.  Observe:

I think he looks a bit like a lion, don't you?

Martha Monday--and Barley's anniversary

Recently, Martha adopted a new dog.  Ghengis Khan (GK for short) is a descendent of Paw-Paw, Martha's beloved Chow Chow who passed away some time ago.  Still a puppy, GK has been featured on The Martha Stewart Show, the Martha Blog and on the Daily Wag, a blog "written" by Francesca and Sharkey, Martha's two Frenchies.

GK is super cute, but I have to say I prefer my own loveable hound, Barley.

Barley has been with us for six years now.  To celebrate this anniversary, we got him a new pet bed.  He seems to enjoy it.

As I've mentioned before, we got Barley from Chicago Animal Control.  If you have room in your heart, home and budget, please consider adopting an animal from a shelter.  Every happy home should include a happy pet!

Barley goes to the vet

We've had Barley for over five years. In that time, we've been to only two veterinarians. Now that we've moved (okay, that was last fall, but still) it was time to find a vet closer to the new house. I'm pleased to say that I've found one I really like--they are knowledgeable, friendly, thorough and very close to home.

The Little Guy and I took Barley in for his annual check-up and shots.

Funny story about this picture: I gave the sit command, and they both went down. This is one of the many advantages about getting (and training) a dog before you have a baby. I'm noticing that households with well-trained animals usually have well-behaved children. Just a TMI observation.

The new vet did a great exam, and really took the time to talk to me. One myth I think she cleared up: for many years, everyone (vets, family, friends, other dog owners, random people on the street, the shelter where we got him) has identified Barley as a pit bull. This vet took a good look at his face structure and determined that while she sees the resemblance, Barley is not a pit bull. She suspects the red coat is Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and suggested that the facial structure could be Rhodesian Ridgeback. Now, none of this really matters to me, but since we had no background information on Barley from the shelter, it was nice to have an expert finally take the time to give him a really good look and try to fill in his history for us.

The Little Guy was really interested in Barley's exam. He kept trying to get right in there with the vet and her assistant. Maybe he's a budding veterinarian? More likely, he's just interested to know that someone in our family other than him also has to see a doctor on a regular basis.

Here's another reason I like our new vet: while we were there, they took a picture of Barley to include in his file. Then, they sent us a welcome letter with a brochure and a copy of the picture. Hooray for quality veterinarian care!

Martha Monday!

I had high hopes, because not only did he have a five-star rating and a bunch of views of his picture, but his picture was also tagged ("face") by the judges!

Sadly, Barley didn't win, nor did he make it as a finalist.

Instead, this borderline psychotic pup won...

Seriously, I am just not impressed with that dog or the picture. It's so staged! Where's the soulfulness, the longing, the look that says "Why are you making me wear bunny ears?" I think Barley conveyed that last thought especially well.
Let's take another look at the dog that should have won the Easter pet contest:

How could we not have won this contest???
Out of all the finalists, and if Barley hadn't been in the running, I would have picked this guy for the winner. Seriously, a dog dressed as a lamb? That's hilarious!

You can view the winner and finalists here. Next time, I think Martha should judge the contest and not her website lackeys. With her good taste, I just know she would have picked Barley as the winner.

Now, how do I break the news to Barley? Maybe a doggie treat will soften the blow.

Martha Monday!

Martha loves her pets. They have pet parties, their own caretakers, and her two Frenchies (Francesca and Sharkey) have their own blog at The Daily Wag. Just in time for Easter, Martha is having a contest for pets dressed in their Easter best. Naturally, I entered Barley.

You can view his picture and description in the contest. The Grand Prize is a year of Purina One dog food. View all the contestants or enter your own pet here. Hop to it! Woof!
